Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung form one of the most acclaimed piano duos in the world, standing out for an artistic chemistry and virtuosity that fuses their styles into a unique sound. Both possess brilliant individual careers, having won prestigious international competitions (Leeds and Stravinsky) and performed with the most important orchestras in Europe, America, and Asia. Their extensive joint discography, under labels such as Signum Classics and Deutsche Grammophon, includes masterpieces by Debussy, Ravel, and Stravinsky, as well as projects dedicated to their daughter Mila. Residents in the U.S., they combine their world tours with the artistic direction of the Joaquín Achúcarro Foundation in Dallas.
The real-life marriage of concert pianists Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung, with their abundant artistic chemistry, passion, and dazzling virtuosity, has resulted in one of the most attractive and impressive piano duos of our time. In the words of the British magazine Music and Arts: «Theirs is a marriage of wondrous colors and elegant dexterity, subtly balanced to make the musical performance sound as one».
Alessio Bax is praised for creating «a mesmerizing listening experience» thanks to his lyricism, insightful interpretations, and dazzling technical ease. First Prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions, 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, and winner of Lincoln Center’s Emerging Artist Award, he has performed as a soloist with nearly 200 orchestras, including the London Symphony, Royal Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Dallas and Houston Symphonies, Japan’s NHK Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic with Yuri Temirkanov, and the City of Birmingham Symphony with Sir Simon Rattle.
His most recent record releases include Forgotten Dances and Debussy & Ravel for Two alongside Lucille Chung. His acclaimed discography with Signum Classics also includes Italian Inspirations; Beethoven’s Hammerklavier and Moonlight sonatas (Gramophone Editor's Choice); Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto; Bax & Chung, a duo album with Lucille Chung; Alessio Bax plays Mozart, recorded with London’s Southbank Sinfonia; Alessio Bax: Scriabin & Mussorgsky (named «Recording of the Month… and quite possibly… of the Year» by MusicWeb International); Alessio Bax plays Brahms (Gramophone Critics' Choice); Bach Transcribed; and Rachmaninov: Preludes & Melodies (American Record Guide Critics' Choice). Recorded for Warner Classics, his album Baroque Reflections was also a Gramophone Editor's Choice. He performed Beethoven’s Hammerklavier Sonata for Daniel Barenboim in the PBS-TV documentary Barenboim on Beethoven: Masterclass, available on DVD from EMI. Likewise, he released the collection Lullabies for Mila on Signum Classics, which also features Chung and is dedicated to their daughter, born in 2014.
Lucille Chung, First Prize winner of the Stravinsky International Piano Competition, has been celebrated by Gramophone for her «stylish and refined» interpretations. Born in Montreal, she debuted at age ten with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, after which Charles Dutoit invited her as a soloist for the orchestra's Asian tour. Since then, she has performed with orchestras worldwide, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Seoul Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony, and the Israel Chamber Orchestra, as well as all major orchestras in Canada, including the Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver symphonies and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She has collaborated with conductors such as Krzysztof Penderecki, Vladimir Spivakov, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Vasily Petrenko.
Lucille Chung's discography includes the complete piano works of György Ligeti for the Dynamic label, the second volume of which comprises his works for piano four-hands and two pianos and marks the first recording collaboration between Bax & Chung. In 2006, the duo released Saint-Saëns' The Carnival of the Animals with the Fort Worth Symphony under the direction of Miguel Harth-Bedoya, with Michael York as narrator. In 2024, Debussy and Ravel for Two was released to great critical acclaim.
Chung recorded Mendelssohn’s two piano concertos for the Richelieu/Radio-Canada label, nominated for the Prix Opus in Canada. In 2007, she released a solo album for the Fazioli Concert Hall Series. She later signed an exclusive contract with Disques XXI/Universal, with the albums Camille Saint-Saëns Piano Transcriptions and Mozart & Me. In 2015, she released an album entirely dedicated to Poulenc for Signum Records, and in 2018 her fourteenth album, Liszt Piano Works, appeared to an excellent reception.
Together, Bax & Chung have performed in the world's leading festivals and concert halls; in 2008 alone, they traveled 20,000 miles by train during their tour with Petrushka four-hands through the far reaches of Stravinsky’s homeland. They have participated in international festivals such as Verbier (Switzerland); Við Djúpið (Iceland); the opening concert of Chungmu Hall in Seoul (Korea); the Pau Casals, Castilla y León, Torroella de Montgrí, and Pamplona festivals in Spain; the Felicja Blumental Festival in Tel Aviv; Lübecker Kammermusikfest and Schloss Elmau in Germany; the Ottawa International Chamber Festival in Canada; and Music@Menlo, Mainly Mozart, and the Bard Music Festival in the United States; in addition to giving concerts in Aruba, Barbados, Brazil, China, Cyprus, France, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Italy, Palestine, Russia, and the United Kingdom.
In recent seasons, they have performed at New York’s Lincoln Center; with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra; for the Chopin Society of St. Paul, Minnesota; in the Dumbarton Oaks series in Washington, D.C.; at the Incontri in Terra di Siena festival in Italy, where Bax assumed the role of Artistic Director in 2017; and at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, performing Mozart's Concerto for Two Pianos with the Buenos Aires Philharmonic.
After meeting at the 1997 Hamamatsu Competition, Bax and Chung maintained a long-distance courtship by telephone and email while touring separately, and finally married in 2004. They are also co-artistic directors of the Joaquín Achúcarro Foundation in Dallas, Texas, created to preserve the legacy of the Basque pianist and support the careers of young pianists.
